Rabies

October 4, 2019: The New York State Department of Health is aware that supply is limited or unavailable for both human rabies vaccines and one rabies immune globulin product. Healthcare providers should continue to administer rabies post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) when indicated.
Rabies Vaccines:- RabAvert rabies vaccine (produced by GlaxoSmithKline) is experiencing a temporary limited supply and is back ordered for wholesalers and distributors. RabAvert is still available directly from the manufacturer. Clinicians can request RabAvert by contacting GSK's Vaccine Service Center directly at 866-475-8222, option 3.
- IMOVAX rabies vaccine (produced by Sanofi Pasteur) is experiencing a temporary supply shortage and is not available at this time.
Human Rabies Immune Globulin:- Imogam (produced by Sanofi Pasteur) is currently experiencing a temporary shortage and is only available to healthcare providers who have a patient with current suspected rabies exposure requiring immediate PEP. Providers can obtain Imogam directly from the manufacturer by faxing a completed Rabies Post-Exposure Form found at vaccineshoppe.com to 1-877-287-9391 (Attn: Sanofi Pasteur Customer Service).
- KEDRAB (produced by Kedrion Biopharma) and HyperRab (produced by Grifols) are available with no restrictions.
Healthcare providers should continue to administer PEP when indicated. Please refer to the CDC website (https://www.cdc.gov/rabies/resources/availability.html) for future updates regarding the availability of human rabies biologics.

The NYSDOH, AIDS Institute is sponsoring a FREE buprenorphine waiver training for clinical providers. In response to the opioid overdose deaths in NYS, increased access to buprenorphine treatment for opioid overdose disorder is urgently needed. Under current regulations, clinic providers are required to obtain a "waiver" to prescribe buprenorphine.

Attention all health care providers - CDC updates pertaining to ebola virus:
- Routinely obtain country-specific travel information to Ebola affected areas (currently Sierra Leone, Guinea and Liberia) in the 21 days before illness onset for any patient presenting with fever or other symptoms consistent with Ebola and ensure that this is communicated to all relevant staff;
- Isolate patients who report a travel history to an Ebola-affected country and who are exhibiting Ebola symptoms in a private room with a private bathroom and use PPE as per the most currrent CDC and NYSDOH guidance;
- Immediately notify the Westchester County Department of Health (914) 813-5000, 24 hours, 7 days a week, of any such individuals.
